Five Second Rule: Simple Syrup

One way I like to refresh old recipes (even shine light on new recipes) is via my Five Second Rule posts. I created it because I wanted to show an easy and useful way to showcase roundups. Some of these roundups feature all of my recipes while others may feature a blend of mine and other folks’ recipes. Here are a couple of my favorite Five Second Rule roundups: Brussels sprouts and tequila. Today, we’re talking about five easy recipes featuring simple syrup.

I’m always preaching about how easy simple syrup is to make. And while I’ve purchased store-bought simple syrup before (no judgements), I have to say, fresh is waaaaay better. I like to make a nice sized batch of it and keep it in the fridge so I have some whenever I’m ready. Not only can you make your own simple syrup in no time (no, really) but it’s even easier to infuse them with your own flavors. Even though you can purchase simple syrup in your local grocery or liquor store, what you can’t do is purchase yummy flavorful ones.

Let’s say you decide to make your own simple syrup at home. Look in your fridge or on your counters and see what herbs and spices you have lying around. You can easily make a mint simple syrup, basil, peppercorn. Go crazy and mix it up! Throw in some fruit and herbs and make a combo simple syrup. It’s that easy you guys. Now that I’ve convinced you to make your own exotic syrups, let’s get on to the recipes.

Five Second Rule: Recipes featuring simple syrup

Vodka Basil Smash | Eat.Drink.Frolic.

TARRAGON & TEQUILA COCKTAIL (using a tarragon simple syrup)
This is a really refreshing cocktail and so good especially if you’re looking to enjoy tequila outside of the realm of a margarita. The tarragon simple syrup is yummy and you can use it in other recipes too. (RECIPE)

VODKA BASIL SMASH (using simple syrup with turbinado sugar)
I don’t always drink vodka but when I do, it’s light and refreshing like this vodka basil smash. It’s easy to make and usually always trending on my blog at random times so other folks like it too. Try it! (RECIPE)

FRENCH TOAST W/BOURBON PEACH SYRUP
French toast is one of my favorite breakfast foods. This is an awesome way to jazz up some French toast in the morning and incorporate some fruit while doing it. (RECIPE)

ICED BOURBON LATTE (using simple syrup with brown sugar)
Yes, simple syrup is perfect in coffee cocktails too! This is one of my favorite coffee recipes and bonus: the simple syrup also has bourbon in it. (RECIPE)

You must add coffee ice cubes to your iced latte increases the flavor.

THE HONEY BEAR COCKTAIL (using a honey and orange simple syrup)
This cocktail was one of my favorites to make and sip. It’s so cute and I’m using one of those combo flavored simple syrups I talk about. It’s so easy. Instead of using sugar to create the syrup, you’ll use honey and infuse it with a little orange peel. (RECIPE)

BONUS
Not a recipe but just a tip: you can use simple syrup for other things besides cocktails and beverages. You can use them while baking or even in savory dishes that call for a little sweetener (think: glazes). You can even use simple syrups to moisten cakes. So feel free to think outside the box (or cup) when it comes to recipes featuring simple syrup!
