Cocktail Week: Aperol Spritz

Jump to recipe

I started cocktail week in 2015 as an opportunity to celebrate adult beverages in an approachable way. I’m not a bartender but I love to experiment and try out new things at home. You know, sort of like a home baker? But with cocktails instead. I love focusing on simple cocktails (check out one of my 5 minute cocktails) and I believe cocktails don’t have to be difficult to make at home. This year, I’m so excited to focus on SPRITZ RECIPES!

Until recently, I wasn’t really a big fan of the Aperol spritz. I didn’t know enough about them to feel comfortable enough to order them. But once I had my first sip, I was in love. There are a couple of reasons why I love a spritz: (1) the flavors remind me of summer. There’s something about that bitterness from the Aperol paired with a cold and crisp prosecco. The second reason is because of how easy it is to put together. Have you ever made an Aperol spritz? It’s crazy simple.

Recently, an article came out in the New York Times warning people of how disgusting this drink is. Now, there are many drinks and foods I don’t find tasty but to dedicate an entire article informing people of how nasty it is, is sinful. Everyone is entitled to their opinions (duh, I have them) but I knew from the start this article couldn’t be trusted. Want to know why?

The writer states that whiskey before 5pm (I think, I can’t remember because I blocked it out) wasn’t appropriate. EXCUSE ME! Anytime you want whiskey, feel free to drink it.

I read opinion pieces sometimes because I like to see other people’s sides but this, I cannot get behind. For that reason, we’re starting out cocktail week with the Aperol spritz. And honestly, one of the highlights of my food writing career was having the opportunity to work with Aperol on a marketing campaign. It was fantastic.

Cocktail week: The Aperol Spritz!

Throughout this cocktail week, I’m focusing on one easy-to-remember ratio for any type of spritz that you want. That’s it. If you can remember this one ratio, you’ll be well on your way to making your own spritzes.

My go-to ratio: 2oz liqueur + 3oz something sparkling + bubbles (something carbonated)

Sometimes you may have to adjust the ratio if your liqueur is too sweet – it’s really just based on your own sipping preference. But for the most part, this ratio is a winner. There are many variations of making an Aperol spritz. My way sort of changes my go-to ratio but it’s still ridiculously easy nonetheless.
