I don’t hate tuna salad but I’ve never been one to crave it. My mom used to make it growing up and I always enjoyed it with crackers and that was about it. Fast forward to my adult life and I still don’t make it (ever) but one day I was craving it but I felt like I wanted an upgrade. That’s where my salmon salad comes in. It’s all the nostalgia of a tuna salad from the 90s but with some much-needed updates (hello capers).
I tried this salmon salad once and loved it so much that I had to try it again to share it with you (and also I got a chance to snack on it again). I also wanted to ensure the measurements were correct before sharing it with the world. The good thing about this recipe (like most recipes) is that you can jazz it up however you like. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, this is simply my suggestion for how to make salmon salad – feel free to add in ingredients as you like! I loved this dish with buttery crackers and as a cheesy, melty sandwich.
I might even go as far as to say that making this salmon salad has gotten me more excited to experiment with other canned/tinned fish. I’m not sure why I was so apprehensive before but I think I’m ready to do more.
And because I know so many of you hate reading extra content before you get to the recipe, despite there being a ‘jump to recipe’ button (yes, I’m being petty and facetious), I’ll go ahead and get to the point with the recipe.
Easy salmon salad
Notes
I used a very small onion as I do not love raw onions but the salad definitely needed it as an ingredient.
Ingredients
- 2 5oz cans of salmon (drained)
- 3 tbsp mayonnaise (more if desired)
- 1 – 1 1/2 tsp dijon mustard
- small stick of celery, diced
- 1 tbsp capers (drained)
- small red onion, diced
- fresh dill, roughly chopped (about a tbsp)
- 2 tbsp relish
- salt & pepper to taste
- a few dashes of hot sauce
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients in a mixing bowl and stir to combine. Add salt, pepper and hot sauce to taste.
- Serve as a sandwich (a yummy salmon melt) or use as a snack with crackers.
