Watermelon Margaritas

This post was supposed to be up around Juneteenth but newborn life is unpredictable. While I didn’t have any new posts here I was able to write and turn in my first freelance piece for Yummly – how exciting! You can guess what the subject was…yep, cocktails. More importantly, essential summer cocktails. I do hope you’ll go check it out (margaritas are definitely on the list).

I wish I could take credit for today’s post but the watermelon margaritas come from my friend, Butter Be Ready. She always has the yummiest recipes and I’m often salivating over her food and drink recipes. Remember this lemon sheet cake? John still talks about this cake to this day and I definitely still dream about it.

Now I can’t stop thinking about that yummy cake.

Summertime sips: watermelon margaritas

I wanted to have this post up by Juneteenth to encourage readers to make them as they celebrate and reflect on the holiday but as I mentioned, #newbornlife. A few months ago when we were naive to how long this pandemic would keep us home, John and I thought our first party in our home would be for Juneteenth. We were planning on having a BBQ and celebrating baby Mason at the same time (since we didn’t have a baby shower). Little did we know, that wouldn’t happen.

Nevertheless, we sipped watermelon margaritas anyway.

The reason why I wanted these in time for Juneteenth is that it is traditional to eat red foods and drinks to celebrate. Foods like red velvet cake, strawberry soda, watermelon – just to name a few. While I’m sure my ancestors were not sipping watermelon margaritas, I’m looking forward to incorporating them into our future Juneteenth celebrations.

If you’re thinking about recreating these refreshing margaritas, head to Butter Be Ready’s site for the recipe. I made a couple of edits only because of the ingredients I had on hand at the time. For instance: I used triple sec instead of agave. I usually have agave in the house but no such luck this time. The other edit was the rim of the glass. The original recipe calls for tajin – a chili-lime seasoning.

I’m impatient and I didn’t have time to purchase any tajin so I used a little chili powder instead. These margaritas are definitely worth making. Not only are they delicious but they’re delightfully refreshing on a hot summer day.

One last unrelated thing: I took these photos with my iPhone because I was too lazy to get my camera.
