Did you know that John and I have had a podcast? Yeah, so we launched it around our wedding anniversary and it’s been fun. Even though we’ve enjoyed having another outlet to be creative and express ourselves, we have to figure out a way to blend our work differences. I like to have a schedule and be very prepared for things and John just sort of goes with the flow. Anyway, this isn’t a post about how couples can work better together – even though that would probably make a really good podcast episode. I’ve been listening to a lot of podcasts lately and I thought I’d share my list of favorite podcasts for entertainment and information.
Every now and then, I find something new to listen to or a friend recommends something and I become obsessed. I really like listening to podcasts as I’m cooking or cleaning – it soothes me and I find that I can really focus then.
I love podcasts that are thought-provoking, murderous (I like murder mysteries), ones that makes me laugh and podcats that keep me up to date with the latest social issues or pop culture news. Right now, I think I have a decent blend of podcasts for entertainment plus ones for feeding me information. Alright, ready for a peek into what I’m listening to?
NOTE: As I update this post, our podcast is currently on hiatus. We keep talking about bringing it back but so far, no luck.
My favorite podcasts for entertainment (and *some* useful info)
Armchair Expert – This podcast is hosted by Dax Shepard and even on the third (I think) update of this post, I still like it. I think I just stumbled upon this show by accident and decided to give it a listen – turns out, it’s one of my favorites. Each episode is usually a couple of hours long, which is perfect for car rides or for me, cooking. Episode to try: Episode 22 with Talib Kweli.
Still Processing – Still Processing was on my list, then I removed it now it’s back on. I took a break for a while (can’t remember why) but I’m really liking their new season. I love the two hosts and their take on social issues and pop culture. Episode to try: Episode 88 titled Apology.
The Dropout – Fascinating story of fooling people out of millions of dollars. This is the story about Theranos – have you heard about this? It’s pretty wild and yet not surprising. I can’t help but think if Elizabeth Holmes (subject of the podcast) looked more like me, if there would be more outrage about this. Episode to try: listen to all of them in chronological order.
The Read – I used to listen to The Read, then I forgot. Now I’m back listening and it fulfills my entertainment quota. They talk about everything related to pop culture and hip-hop. The things that I’m usually thinking, they say out loud. Episode to try: any of them.
Dr. Death – Again, I love crime and murder podcasts. Dr. Death is from the same folks who brought us Dirty John (ugh so good). This one is about a terrible doctor and a medical system that failed to protect patients. It’s pretty ridiculous. Episode to try: listen to all of them in chronological order.
Death, Sex and Money – This is another podcast that I just stumbled upon and really enjoy. Most of their episodes involve candid conversations that you may not bring up in normal everyday conversations. The host, Anna Sale, has a really soothing voice, which is just lovely. Episode to try: interview with Diane Guerrero on debt and deportation (there are so many good episodes).
Bonus shows
Strong Black Legends – New podcast started by Netflix. They have an Instagram account, which I love, by a similar name (Strong Black Lead). This one is all about interviewing Black legends, as the name suggests. I’m just getting started on this new show. Episode to try: Episode 1 with Lynn Whitfield.
