5 Minute Cocktail: Rum Swizzle

Jump to recipe

Raise your hand if you know what a swizzle is? Don’t worry if you don’t, I’m here to explain. A swizzle is a rum based cocktail usually serve with lots of ice and bitters. I’ve read that swizzles can also be made with gin but I’m not too sure about that. It’s pretty much an oxymoron to say rum swizzle but I think a lot of people think of rum when you say swizzle, right?

Oh who knows? I know I don’t.

Anyway, in today’s edition of Five Minute Cocktails, we’re making a tart and ice cold rum swizzle that can be adjusted as you like as far as sweetness. You can even adjust the ingredients if you like. That’s the beauty of cocktails recipes (any recipe for that matter), you can adjust and substitute as you see fit. Recipes are simply a guide not the absolute last word.

Back to the rum swizzle. This one is sweetened with an orange thyme simple syrup I had in the refrigerator but a “regular” simple syrup will work just fine. No need to over-think this; it is a five minute cocktail for crying out loud.

So for this drink, I used what I like to call fun ice. Fun ice is ice that looks like little pebbles and it’s great for crunching. Fun ice is also ice that I can buy at Sonic. Is that laughable? I never actually eat at Sonic but I do find time to go over and buy ice when we need it. Call me crazy but their ice is perfect for cocktails.

I consider this a five minute cocktail not only because of its simplicity in replicating the recipe but because you won’t need a ton of bar tools to pull this off. All you’ll need is the glass you’ll sip this from and a bar spoon. Yes, a bar spoon is different than your regular kitchen spoons. Scroll down a bit to shop a few bar spoons. You don’t need a ton of tools to build your bar situation at home, but a bar spoon is one tool that comes in handy sometimes.

Enough of me rambling about bar spoons.
