Hi. It’s me. I’m alive and well. Even better, I’m popping up with a new series and I hope I can keep it going. Fingers crossed. So here’s the deal with this series.
I’m a huge fan of the show Succession. Have you watched it? Please tell me you have. Season 3 starts this Sunday (10/17) and I just finished re-watching the first two seasons in preparation for this weekend. Not familiar with the show? Here’s a synopsis from Wikipedia:
Succession follows the Roy family, owners of media conglomerate Waystar RoyCo. The family patriarch, Logan Roy, has experienced a decline in health. His four children – removed oldest son Connor, power-hungry Kendall, irreverent Roman, and politically savvy Siobhan – all with varying degrees of connection to the company, begin to prepare for a future without their father, and each begins vying for prominence within the company.
It’s such a great show and even though this family is cringy at times, I’m obsessed. Hence the reason why I’m starting this series.
Gin Martini: yay or nay?
If I’m being honest, there are two things happening with this post:
- (1) I’m trying to figure out if I like martinis. This is an item on my 40×40 list (more on that another time) and
- (2) I just really love Succession and thought why not provide some drink ideas for those of us who will be knee-deep into each episode every Sunday.
And so here we are.
I chose a martini for the first episode because a martini sounds so perfect for Succession and Geri (character on the show) drinks them. I decided gin instead of vodka for the simple reason that I like gin. After reading way too much about martinis, vermouth and ratios, scroll a little more for the recipe I ended up settling on.
Ingredients
- 2 oz your favorite gin
- 1 oz vermouth
- Lemon twist
Instructions
- Add ice in a cocktail shaker and pour in the gin and vermouth. Stir vigorously for 30 seconds then strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.
The verdict: I think I’m going to leave martinis to James Bond and whoever else drinks them. This wasn’t my first time trying one. More recently I let an actual professional make a proper one while at a restaurant. And while it wasn’t disgusting, it wasn’t my favorite beverage. I’m super-new to this martini thing though, so perhaps I’ll keep trying (or maybe I won’t). Either way, iced cold is the way to go (duh). I’ve read a few articles that suggest stirring a martini versus shaking it. I didn’t retain the info so you’ll have to look that up yourself (I’m very helpful here).
So, here’s your first drink for our Succession Sunday series. Remember, the drinks I’ll share in this series will be suggestions for you to sip on while we watch Succession’s third season. As always, if you have an idea for a drink, send it my way. Cheers!
