My Word for 2016

So we’re 6 days into a new year and a lot of folks are probably already rethinking their resolutions or hard at work trying to make 2016 “their year to _______ ” (fill in unreasonable task). I believe that when a new year begins so does a lot of reflection and planning for the year to come; I think we all fall victim to the pressures of comparing how the exiting year went and how we’ll immediately make it better blah blah blah. Even though I’m a firm believer in planning and staying on track, I’ve come to believe that a birthday is the real time to develop goals or resolutions, if you will. Birthdays are a true celebration of the number of cycles you’ve made around the sun and that to me is the real new year.

My definition of a “real” new year doesn’t negate the fact that January 1st represents the start of something new and exciting for most of us – it’s a time to refresh and start over so to speak. I’ve decided to look at the start of a new year and a day of birth a little differently now. My birthday is when I create goals I’d like to accomplish over the next 12 months (as seen here) and at the start of a new year, is when I plan my new year’s approach with a word; a word that will frame how I handle ups and downs personally and professionally. That word for 2016 is simply: GO.

This quote is a reminder to just GO. Now, don’t get me wrong – I’m not a crazy person who just goes without really thinking it through. I’ll still think through situations…the goal is to GO and not overthink it. Overthinking generally ruins it.

So for 2016, I’m excited to GO. Whether I’m letting go, preparing to go on a trip or going to work, 2016 will be a year of constant forward movement. So, let’s go! Let’s go and do all the things we’ve always wanted to do but never got around to, let’s go and travel a bit more, let’s go and try restaurants we’ve never tried before…just go.

Cheers!
