Have you grown tired of me talking about non-dairy milk options? I’m going to assume you haven’t especially because I *really* only talk about oat milk. I don’t have anything against the other non-dairy options but oat milk seems to be the one that has resonated with me the most – flavor wise. Anyway, I had some oat milk in the fridge and I thought, why not make some French toast. Add another layer on top: let’s make five spice French toast. Duh.
So a few years ago, I was having brunch at The Flying Squirrel and I ordered five spice french toast. I enjoyed it though, I’ve never had it again. I honestly, have no idea if it’s even still on their menu. Since I had the ingredients necessary to make some French toast, I thought why not try this dish at home (spoiler alert: I’m so glad I did).
Alright, so what’s give spice? I’m glad you asked.
I hope I get this right: five spice powder, sometimes labeled as Chinese five spice, is a blend of – you guessed it, five spices. It’s a combo of: star anise, cloves, Chinese cinnamon, Sichuan pepper and fennel. There are different varieties of Chinese five spice powder but I *think* this is maybe the most common variety. Correct me if I’m wrong, folks.
Five spice French toast (with oat milk)
I love pancakes and waffles but I can really get down with some French toast. I’m very particular about it though. I don’t know how you feel about it but soggy French toast is not where it’s at. Do you know people who like soggy French toast? I do. I like a firm and flavorful toast not a soggy and sad one. Am I right, folks?
Enough about soggy French toast (that no one wants).
What’s your bread of choice when it comes to making French toast? If I’m really craving it, I use whatever we have at home but if I’m planning it out, it’s challah all the way. It’s thick and it really soaks in all of the flavors and spices. If you haven’t tried French toast with challah bread, you’re truly missing out. Trust.
