5 Minute Cocktail: The Brown Derby

Jump to recipe

Not drinking for the month of January was eye-opening a bit for me. I’ve done it before so abstaining from alcohol wasn’t a new concept for me; I’ve also given up alcohol before for Lent. This time around, I was productive like I was last year and I also saved lots of money (obviously). Not going out and spending unnecessary dollars, is always lovely. Even though I longed for a cocktail while abstaining, when January was over, I wasn’t necessarily in a rush to drink. Shocking, right?

I wasn’t in a rush to dry out my skin or overindulge and feel terrible in the morning (I mean, I have a skincare regimen to uphold). I’ve imbibed since January has ended but I’m taking it slow and setting new rules for myself. Well, one new rule: don’t order the next drink until I’ve had a glass of water. Maybe it’s silly, maybe it isn’t but it’s what I’m doing and that’s that. That’s especially important if I continue to drinks that go down easy like this brown derby cocktail.

Have you ever heard of a brown derby? I’d never heard of it until I read about it somewhere (not sure where) and thought my readers needed to know about this easy drink! It’s quite simple and I’d say it’s one of the classic cocktails we rarely hear about. I’m considering this a classic cocktail because the history of it goes back to the 1930’s.

The only thing that will keep this 5 minute cocktail indeed, at 5 minutes is making sure you have the honey syrup made beforehand. I always like to keep a variety of flavored simple syrups in the fridge anyway so making a syrup wasn’t a factor when I made this drink. Like traditional simple syrup, honey syrup is practically the same thing. Instead of using equal parts sugar and water, you’ll use equal parts honey and water. See? Easy.

You ready to try it?
