So here’s the thing: I don’t love avocado. I don’t mind it when it’s in a burrito or some type of dish in a very low-key way but when it overpowers my food, it’s a no for me. Now, I did try my hand at guacamole not too long ago and it wasn’t bad. I’ve tried many versions of guac and have found that the most enjoyable version for me is one that isn’t chunky. Barf (sorry to all of you chunky guacamole lovers). Anyway, avocado toast is all the rage and it doesn’t look like it’s going away. While many of you enjoy it, I spend a lot of my time looking for an avocado toast alternative.
I’m happy to report today: I think I found one.
I always see avocado toast on menus and while it seems trendy and probably delicious (if you like that sort of thing), I could never bring myself to order it in a restaurant. Also, have you noticed how expensive avocado toast can be in some places? To be honest, I thought avocado toast was going to be one of those food fads that didn’t stick around for very long. Sort of like edamame. I mean, sure, it’s still on many menus but it certainly isn’t as popular like it used to be, am I right?
So when I was thinking of an avocado toast alternative, the first thought that came to mind was texture. If I’m going to recreate this popular hipster breakfast, I had to find something that was similar in texture. At first I thought about chickpeas – like hummus toast. That doesn’t sound bad but it wasn’t exactly what I was looking for. I sat on the couch and thought really hard while watching Golden Girls or Gilmore Girls; not sure which one but I’m pretty sure one of those shows were involved.
Then it hit me: sweet potatoes. When mashed they could result in the same-ish texture as avocados. And just like that, we have an alternative.
Avocado toast alternative: sweet potato toast
Does sweet potato toast sound weird to you? At first I thought and maybe people would frown at the idea but it’s actually really delicious. It’s perfect as a breakfast dish, as a snack or even as an appetizer for a party or something. Just like avocado toast, you can dress it up however you like.
You can try savory or breakfast-inspired sweet potato toast. You could even try something spicy (with sriracha or chili peppers), if you’re feeling daring. Anyway, I hope you’ll try this sweet potato toast, especially if you’ve been looking for an avocado toast alternative like me. I made two options for sweet potato toast: bacon & egg and goat cheese. You can certainly try a variety of flavor combinations. Other options to consider:
sweet potato mash + pico de gallo (think bruschetta)
sweet potato mash + prosciutto
sweet potato mash + tomato, mozzarella and basil (think Margherita)
Get crazy, get wild and say hello to your new favorite snack.
Ingredients
- 2 sweet potatoes, cooked & mashed
- Bread, toasted
- Eggs, scrambled
- Bacon, cooked & crumbled
- Thyme
- Goat cheese crumbles
- Oregano
Instructions
For the mashed sweet potatoes
- Cook the potatoes however you prefer to enjoy mashed sweet potatoes. I used: salt, pepper, butter, splash of cream and brown sugar.
To assemble the toast
- I like using fresh bread from the bakery - use whatever type of bread you like. Toast on both sides then start building.
- To make the bacon & egg option: pile on the sweet potato mash, top with scrambled eggs, crumbled bacon then garnish with thyme.
- For the goat cheese toast: spread sweet potato mash, then sprinkle goat cheese on top, garnish with oregano.
I love avocado toast, but I definitely want to try this! So many possibilities!!
