Living off of $20 a week: Part 2

So here we are. Another week of spending less. This process has made me think more about where my money goes but like I mentioned last week, it’s also helping me to realize that it’s OK to treat yourself to something nice once in a while especially if you can afford it. This time around, it did feel easier than the first time but it felt more difficult too – it’s weird. That doesn’t even make sense probably. It was easier because we planned better but it was more difficult because I felt like I wanted more things.

Oh whatever. Here’s how the second week went.

Sunday // Prep Day

Our usual menu planning day. This time around, we planned for the weekend.

Monday // $20

I’m back to my sandwich & chips for lunch but to liven things up a bit, I threw in a slice of pound cake that I made. John and I went to the gym and quite honestly, though John was responsible for cooking, we were both way too tired to cook and wait for food. So off we went to get tacos at Mojo Burrito (thanks for dinner John, haha!).

Tuesday // $20

This was a long day because I had an event for work and the venue was about 40 minutes away. There was no money spent today. Nothing to dwell on either because this day made me tired.

Wednesday // $20

Switched it up and had a salad for lunch. Halfway through my lunch, I felt like my salad was missing something then it hit me: I forgot to add in my dried cranberries. Boo. I’m done with salads.

my sad, sad salad.

Thursday // $20

Online shopping is luring me. It’s Thursday night football so we decided to make an unplanned trip to the grocery store to pick up cookies (me) and John got a couple of snacks too.

Friday // $16

I never cook dinner on the weekend but when I got home from work, I cooked! It felt really good BUT I sort of fell off of the wagon. It was Friday night and I was itching to get out so off we went…for drinks. The good news is that we split our bill, right? Blah, whatever. We had fun.

Saturday // $ -5

Better than last week right? I’m done. I’ve lost count. I went out for a “business brunch” with my friend, Jennifer, and spent more but this was a necessary transaction.

What I learned this week:

Thoughtful spending is hard but it is doable. It takes practice and planning but it can be done. I’m going into this for one more week with not eating out for lunch and dinner, cooking at home more and only buying necessities. My current feeling going into another week of this is exhausted.

‘Til next week’s update…
