Originally, this post was going to be very similar to Heavy Table’s ‘What’s in Your Fridge’ series – specifically the one with Prince. How cool was that?! But after looking at the current state of my refrigerator, I decided that no one needed to see what’s in my fridge because it was a mess. It’s not totally out of control but it’s unorganized and chaotic. It’s probably not that big of a deal but I couldn’t chance it. Even though I’m not exactly showing you my refrigerator, I am sharing some of the things that I keep in it and what I think are must have items. So here we go – my thoughts on items you should always have in the kitchen.
Chicken Broth – I always keep chicken broth (I do store bought and not homemade). I usually cook rice in chicken broth for a bit of extra flavor.
Speaking of rice…it’s next up on the list. I love rice. I remember being in college and just eating bowls of it. So good.
Olive Oil – this should be self-explanatory. You should always have olive oil for all of your cooking needs.
Lemons/Limes – a few of my recipes involve fresh lemon or lime juice but I primarily keep lemons and limes in the house for cocktails. Obviously.
Poultry (or seafood) – if I need to whip up something relatively quick for dinner, poultry or seafood are both very easy to pull off in a short amount of time.
Eggs – so necessary for me to always have eggs on hand not necessarily for baking purposes but for breakfast. Just last weekend I made an open-faced egg sandwich – still working on the name of the dish…
Bread – I have to keep bread for those egg sandwiches that I make, right? I usually like to keep potato bread on hand it’s one of my favorite breads for making French toast.
Cheese – sandwich cheese or shredded cheese is ALWAYS in my refrigerator. I need cheese to make grilled cheese sandwiches – my favorite.
Fresh herbs – a little greenery is so nice to add at the end of a dish. Herbs make the dish look beautiful but also taste delicious.
Alcohol – Ok, alcohol isn’t always on my grocery list but I always make sure that I keep something in my home. I like to have options or at least be able to offer guests some type of cocktail.
So there you have it – my list of kitchen necessities. What’s on your list?
